Age Spots

Age spots can show up anywhere and on anybody. They are mainly the result of sun exposure.

Your body's cells create melanin to protect your skin from sun damage. Overproduction of this melanin can lead to age spots and other pigmentation changes. Of course, aging and hormonal changes can also contribute to this.

There are a number of myths and misconceptions surrounding age spots. Some people believe they are a sign of skin cancer. This is completely untrue. Even though age spots' pigmentation is often mistaken for cancer, the actual spots are completely harmless.

Age spots can come in different shapes and sizes. Some are small as a freckle, others are much larger. There is a large range of colors. It's because they can take so many forms that people can mistake them for skin cancer.

However, it is worth mentioning that the development of age spots is a sign you might not be protecting yourself from the sun well enough, and sun exposure can cause skin cancer.

A lot of people also believe liver spots are a sign of liver disease. Again, no need to worry. These spots are only related to pigment changes, and have nothing to do with the health of your liver.

It's also believed that age spots appear after you turn 40. However, age spots can show up much sooner if you don't protect yourself from the sun.

The final misconception is that these are just something you have to live with, and a part of the aging process. Again this is far from true! There are a number of things we can do to help you fight age spots.

Age Spots Solutions

Second Chance Facial Rejuvenation®

Using the Second Chance Facial Rejuvenation® protocol, age spots can be dramatically reduced, or completely resolved, with the added bonus of stimulating collagen production, and decreasing wrinkles. Topical microcurrent with topical therapeutic grade essential oil infused products makes an effective well rounded treatment.

These are cosmetics with pharmaceutical properties. Unlike pure cosmetics that simply cover or decorate the skin, cosmeceuticals have measurable biologic effects on the skin. Some cosmeceuticals have pigment fighting properties. These include hydroquinone, alpha-hydroxy acids, retinoids, and vitamin C.

Remember to protect yourself from the sun.  After all, prevention is easier than treatment.

Laser resurfacing can help your acne scars, fine lines, skin texture, pigmentation, and shallow scars.

The IPL's intense light is absorbed by pigment spots. These dark structures instantaneously heat up and are damaged by this intense light. The body then repairs this damage, and in doing so the pigment spots are sloughed off.

There are three categories of peels: superficial, medium, and deep. Peels work in part by producing a controlled chemical injury to the skin. The injured skin "peels" off and is replaced by healthier skin. The triggered healing response also results in boosted collagen production.
