What is Microcurrent?

Electrical energy is measured in amperes.  Microcurrent is one, one millionth of one ampere, a very small current indeed.There is not enough current to stimulate sensory nerves so the current flow is rarely felt, and if felt is a mild tingle.  

Microcurrent history

In 1830, Dr. Carlos Matteucci discovered that injured tissue in the human body discharged electricity and since that discovery, over 120 years ago, many experiments with microcurrent have been done to validate his findings. The use of microcurrent has become an acceptable form of therapy in the treatment of wounds, soft tissue and bone fracture because of its ability to heal the body at a rate of 250% to 350% faster than someone not using microcurrent therapy. However, it was the accidental discovery of a physician treating Bell's palsy patients for paralysis that lead microcurrent to become integrated into the aesthetic field. He noticed that the face of his patients were smoother and they appeared much younger looking after treatments.

Effects of Microcurrent

In 1982 Ngok Cheng published, The Effect of Electric Currents on ATP Generation, Protein Synthesis and Membrane Transport  This study showed that microcurrent increased ATP production,  as well as increasing amino acid transport into the cell by 70% and waste product removal. The implications for human healing and repair are obvious.

Cosmetic use of Microcurrent

Microcurrent technology is gaining recognition in  the anti-aging industry and is used in top spas and medical offices to perform facial sculpting - tightening, toning, and firming of aging skin. With dramatic results, microcurrent treatments are often referred to as "non-surgical face lifts"

Microcurrent works cosmetically by working on two levels, the facial muscles AND the facial skin.  Facial muscles attach to the  skin and when they lose their tone or resting muscle length, it causes our facial skin to wrinkle and sag  With aging, some muscles cause grooves to form, from repetitive facial expressions. Frown lines are good example of this. Other muscles in our face lose their resting tone, with the constant pull of gravity, and these areas start to sag. The jaw line, cheeks and neck area commonly are most affected.  The use of microcurrent, on specific muscle groups, and at varying frequencies, causes a reaction in the spindle cells, as well as in the golgi tendon organ, causing muscles to rest at a shorter length.  When this happens the face is lifted, firmed and toned to a more youthful appearance.

At the skin level, microcurrent improves circulation, and reduces inflammation,  which stimulates production of collagen and elastin, improving the  tone and texture of the skin and eliminating fine lines and wrinkles. A younger face is not just about "lifting" but the "radiant glow" of youthful skin. Microcurrent facial rejuvenation delivers on both these aspects of a youthful face!
